Clinical Pathology

The clinical pathology service laboratory specialises in metabolic profiling of the mouse. As part of one of the primary clinics in the European Mouse Disease Clinic (EUMODIC) programme, the laboratory is involved in the development of standardised protocols for metabolic phenotyping of the mouse across Europe. We have adapted several of the well established technologies utilised in human biomedical science to overcome the challenges involved in working with the small sample volumes obtained from mice.

We have successfully worked with biotech companies to accommodate sample volume requirements and optimise sample throughput. Volumes as low as 2ul for some assays and adaptations to various semi-automated analysers facilitate routine metabolic profiling and allows incorporation of phenotyping platforms into high-throughput screens aimed at novel target discovery. Available platforms include biochemical analysis of blood and urine samples, haematology, immunoassays for specific proteins, Luminex multiplex assays and FACS. The laboratory follows a strict internal quality control regime and subscribes to the UK national external quality assurance scheme.
