PhD opportunities in 2018 Three vacancies for 4-year MRC funded PhD/DPhil Studentships starting October 2018 Closing date Sunday 4th February 2018 The MRC Harwell Institute is an International Centre for Mouse Genetics at the forefront of studies in mouse functional genomics and mouse models of human disease. We are engaged in lifetime studies, from developmental abnormalities through to diseases of ageing. The projects available incorporate a whole range of skills from genome editing, phenotyping, anatomy, histopathology, imaging, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, molecular biology, cell biology and cell culture. The research themes offering PhD projects at the MRC Harwell Institute for 2018 are: Genetic basis of type 2 diabetes Genetics of circadian rhythms and sleep in health and disease The genetics and pathology of deafness The role of cilia in development and disease Disorders of sex development Bioinformatics of mouse models of disease Statistical genomics Investigating Novel Stress Response Pathways in Neurological Disease Novel and bespoke mouse models for dissecting neurodegenerative disease Our doctoral training programme MRC Harwell Institute offers first class opportunities for PhD students including a formal training programme. Students join a 4-year PhD programme that includes an initial three month induction with training and two rotations chosen from the projects offered before selecting and embarking on their research project. MRC DTA Students are registered with the University of Oxford. The studentship includes an annual stipend of £15,240 and University fees. As part of specific collaborations students may be registered in other Universities. We are also an Affiliated Research Centre with the Open University (www.open.ac.uk) and currently have six students registered with the Open University. We offer the same opportunities and have the same expectations of ALL of our students regardless of how they are funded or where they are registered. Currently we have 27 doctoral training students. Together with the postdoctoral fellows and other members of the Unit our students contribute to a vibrant atmosphere providing a supportive environment for the development of future leaders in mouse genetics and the life sciences. Residence requirements Residence requirements are detailed in the Research Council UK (RCUK) conditions of research council training grants as follows: For purposes of residence requirements the UK includes the United Kingdom and Islands. To be eligible for a full award (stipend and university fees) a student must have: Settled status in the UK, meaning they have no restrictions on how long they can stay.Been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for three years prior to the start of the studentship.
